Playing the Musical Saw

The musical saw is a special instrument with a mystical sound. Playing the saw requires good ear for music as you will not find the notes on set positions unlike in many other instruments. When played correctly the saw sings beautifully and for instance some

folk songs are excellent “saw pieces”. The saw can be used to play almost any type or music as long as the the notes are played long and peacefully even though some saw players are brave enough to include fast pieces in their repertoire.

Saw players come from all age groups and also many women have found saw playing an engaging hobby.  The easy way to get started is to buy a specially made musical saw, a violin bow and some rosin. Even a standard wood- cutting saw can be used but the teeth can easily cut into clothes.

The saw is placed between the knees on a slight angle. The blade is then bended into an S-curve from the top. A well rosined bow is drawn carefully across the saw in order to find the sounds. Online guides can be found on internet for beginners. By dedicated practise the saw can be mastered and the the playing will sound beautiful.

At The saw is singing camp we learn to play new songs and rehearse for the performances of the weekend. New members and beginners will be thought and given advice by virtuoso players of long experience. Sometimes we meet up on a winter camp and  practise. We also practise at folk music events. During the Kaustinen Folk Music festival last year we had a popular workshop where anyone could try out saw playing.

Saw players go to folk music events like Samuelin Poloneesi, Kaustinen and Koilis-Savo Soi. Saw players are also popular performers on weddings, birthdays, funerals, christenings and other functions.
